Definitely the fourth of Forchheim's breweries. Could be anywhere, there is nothing particular Franconian about it.

Comment from Dave Brown on 9/18/2004 3:40:40 AM
A bit confusing, with Erdinger signs everywhere, but the beer appeared to be their own, and was pleasant enough. Nothing like the atmosphere of the other Forcheim brewerys, but then it was just a nice clean place.

Comment from Russ R. on 12/8/2009 3:37:42 PM
A bit more upscale than the other breweries in town. The Vollbier was unremarkable but the service and environment was pleasant. Worth a stop if you're in town.

Phenolic brew but sympathetic brewery.

Comment from Dave Brown on 9/18/2004 3:50:12 AM
The Greif is a bit of a walk out of town, past the Eichhorn, and while the bar is nothing special, I thought the beer was very pleasant.

Very basic pub here. Nothing fancy inside, but the beer is very good. The locals were all very pleasant, spent more than one night enjoying the various beers. Worth the effort.

I enjoyed the Weihnachtsfestbier at 10am on a Monday. Simple pub with a very local crowd. The brewery tap is next to the brewery just outside the ring road. Don't confuse this with pub on Sattlertorstrasse which is long-closed. Well worth the trek.

Good, softish and full-bodied beer. The bottled Festbier is especially good. I also like the Gaststätte very much.

Comment from Dave Brown on 9/18/2004 3:47:13 AM
The front of the Hebendanz was covered with scafolding, which may explain the power cut while I was there, and why it felt a bit dark in the late afternoon. The bar is a bit down at heel, but the locals don't appear to mind, and the beer was good enough to make this a place worth going to.

A wonderful, earthy hostelry with good, refreshing, hoppy beer. Very basic, unpretentious pub with "real" drinkers. Unfortunately we had to share our experience with one "Bernard Denbow", an unsavoury character from England (Ach! Englander Schweinehund!) whose "humour" exposed his coarse English roots.

Not a place to bring the wife & kids, but my very understanding German girlfriend (now wife) was good enough to come into this rowdy local and help me secure some of their bottled specialty beers. I didn't press to try the draft vollbier but after having their excellent Fest at home (which she loved as well), I wished I had.

This centrally-located brewery is right between Brauerei Neder and Brauerei Greif on the same street in Forchheim?s picturesque altstadt. The beer vom Fäss (Export-Hell) was okay, but bland compared to Neder?s characterful offerings. The food was even blander, a basic slab of meat with steamed vegetables, no inspiration, and bare cooking skills. Decoration was minimal, and gave the impression that we were in a precursor of decorating minimalism. Don?t let the cute façade fool you, this is one veeeery simple tavern.

Export Hell (tap review):
-A full, big-bubbled head diminishes swiftly atop the clear, deep golden.
-A quiet aroma, typical of the region apparently, produces some sweet cereal allusions, and not much more.
-Honey and wet cereal keep things interesting, but can?t stir up any emotion in me.
-Supporting hops are felt towards the end, but everything is so timid.
-Neder next door was much better the day we visited.

This is truly the working mans bar in this town.Full of cigarette smoke, but the beer is excellent. The hardest part was getting past the looks when we went in for the first time. Once we got to know some of the locals we had a great time here. Would definitely give this bar a try.

Now a smoker's club, I avoided the smokers by staying in the entryway and ordering through the hatch. The fassbier is a simple as is the Festbier. I'm sure my experience could have been enhanced if I had braved the smoke!

A nice brewery with nice, soft beer.

Comment from Dave Brown on 9/18/2004 3:43:43 AM
Full of locals when I went there, it, like the Hebendanz next door, appears to be a working class boozer that caters for it's market. The beer was good and went down very nicely.

Now this is a weirdly-populated brewery! Situated on the same street as 2 other small breweries(!!), this was definitely the most characterful of them all. My wife was the only woman in the place, and probably with good reason. Apparently, the men that day came to "let go", "relax", and not be judged. And it shows. Let?s leave it at that. Beautiful paintings on the wall, lamp fixtures were small replicas of boiling tanks, plants are lined up on the windowsill, decorations are crowded but well-chosen. We had the Schwarze Anna and Kellerbier from the bottle, and both were very good examples of their respective styles. Much better beer quality than Hebendanz next door imho, and that ambiance is...memorable. ;)

Kellerbier (bottled review):
-A lofty head bobs atop the hazy orange.
-Balanced hop herbs and malty structure provide ample enjoyment.
-Another beautiful extraction job offers a lascivious body.
-Oranges and coriander leaves quietly peek through the otherwise low-key aroma.
-Herbal hop bitterness is frank and down to earth.
-A very drinkable and full-bodied kellerbier, with all the classic signposts of what I understand of the style.

From the bottle at the brewery.

A bottle drunk back home a month later seemed to have lost most of its hoppiness, and was overcome by the yeast character. A shadow of the fresh one I had purchased and drank at the pub itself. From very good to okay.

Schwarze Anna (bottled review):
-Ample head sits over the opaque blackness.
-Roasted malt bitterness and molasses efficiently attract in both aroma and flavor profile.
-Huge malts and perfect carbonation make for a smashing body.
-Dark chocolate and nuts roam in this very fine schwarzbier.
-Not the most complex example, but it?s so rich and satisfying!

The nicest of the three breweries,as far as decor. A bit tough to get in at times due to the crowds and the rather unusual hours. Like the neder beer, in particular the schwarz anna. Which is one of my favorites.

This is truly a wonderful place. I spent many good times here and will never forget it. Recommend this brewery to anyone wanting a nice touch of Germany. Pete Meighen Ohio Jobs and Family Services Communications Network Engineer

Friendly pub with a lovely Fassbier. The Schwartze Anne (Dunkles) was the highlight.

Cozy little pub has a number of country beers on tap, including Huppendorfer Bier from Brauerei Grasser in Huppendorf. Open every day.

Comment from Martin T. on 6/17/2006 10:33:13 AM
We walked by before opening time (5pm), so couldn't get in, but the advertised tap list wasn't anything special. Only Forchheimer beers, which you can easily get at the brewery tap's themselves, but the added bonus of Brauerei Grasser Vollbier. Perhaps the selection varies?
