| The brewery that defines the Franconian style. I am a big fan of the Winterbock, which they will only serve later in the afternoon. |

| Only a characterless Pils on tap. Awful! The pub was unpleasant. Wish I had read the reviews on this website before stopping. |

| My favorite place to stop for lunch just outside Bamberg. Good food, a consistently high quality selection of beers. With so many small breweries going out of business, I draw solace from the fact that Merkendorf can still support two great breweries. |

| The Felsentrunk is worth a short visit; the hiking from Wuergau (during which other local beers can be sampled) makes a longer stay worthwhile. |

| I have stopped here often while in the Fraenkischen Schweiz. While it is oriented towards (German) tourists, I don't find it to be a tourist trip. The beers are of consistently high quality. During a recent visit I was accompanied by an American brewer who spoke with the Schwanenbraeu Braumeister about his work. They are diligent about treating the water, which is not the case with all brewers in the region. |

| The lager had an unpleasant aftertaste but the tasty Hirschentrunk made the visit worthwhile. |

| Brauerei Gasthof Rittmayer in Hallerndorf

| Sampled their beers in both Hallerndorf and on the Kreuzberg and found the latter as the better venue, since they had the Rauchbier on draft, which has a smokiness that doesn't overwhelm the palate as with Schlenkerla. Their Keller is my favorite on the Kreuzberg, not as developed as Friedel but with more choice than Lieberth. |

| One of my favorite places for lunch that is easily accessible from the A3 autobahn. The building seems to be from the 60s or 70s and is not an especially attractive venue for drinking beer. But the Wirtin is always friendly and the fellow customers polite. I have never drunk a Rauchbier there (as another poster had), only the Helles and Festbier both of which are high quality. The ham plate is from their own pigs and may be the best smoked ham I have ever eaten in Germany. |

| Schwindbräu in Aschaffenburg

| Somewhat far from the center of Aschaffenburg but well worth the visit. We arrived before the Braeustubl was officially opened but the Wirt welcomed us anyway, sitting with us and chatting enthusiastically about beer. The Kellerbier I sampled was easily the best I have tried west of the Spessart (maybe not much of a claim), light but nicely hopped. I did not try the Pils that was also on tap, and on weekends draft Dunkeles and Weizen are available. |

| Brauerei Schlappeseppel Gmbh in Aschaffenburg
|
| Comment from DougN on 9/23/2010 8:14:00 AM |
| Schlapppeseppel is a great pub - full of activity at all hours of the day. But the beer (brewed by Eder of Grossostheim) is nothing special. It is above the quality of the mass-brewed beers but not at the level of what one expects of Franconian beer. For instance, the kellerbier had a citric taste with no hops bitterness. |
