Sonnenbräu in Lichtenberg
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 6/18/2007 3:58:32 AM
Small brewery in the middle of nowhere (close to the former border between West- and East-Germany). There's no tap at the brewery, but a little shop, where You can buy the whole range of their beers. the Lichtenberger Pils is an excellent, powerful Pilsener in the Bohemian style. Worth a try...!

Brauerei Seelmann in Zettmannsdorf
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 6/12/2007 6:47:44 AM
Last week I was on a nice bicycle trip through the Steigerwald and visited - that's understood - also Zettmannsdorf. Unfortunately there were absolutely no signs of activity; so it looks, that the revival of this fine place will not take place in the next future.......!

Brauerei Keesmann in Bamberg
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 12/2/2005 11:32:51 AM
............tried all of the Bamberg Bock's this autumn, but the ´KEESMANN was the best. Very well balanced, very tasty and not "thick" at all !

Lindenbräu in Gräfenberg
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 5/31/2005 9:40:06 AM
Wonderful Maibock ! This beer of the type "Heller Bock" is extremely tasty: big hoppy, aromatic nose; full malty taste and a dry hoppy finish; well balanced, full bodied and nearly not sweet at all. Worth a detour....

Schloßbrauerei in Reckendorf
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 7/27/2004 8:13:07 AM
The unfiltered Lager, served in nice, classical steins, belongs among the best examples of this typical franconian beer style. Hoppy, but more "velvet" than sharp. Very good!

Brauerei zur Sonne in Bischberg
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 7/27/2004 8:12:15 AM
The yellow-golden Vollbier is not too aromatic and has a sticky aftertaste.

Brauerei Hümmer in Breitengüssbach
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 7/27/2004 8:11:03 AM
The Lager, a Kellerbier, is the kind of beer You can't get enough of. Served in almost "elegant" tall beer-steins; You get a well balanced, hoppy and full bodied "velvet" Lager. Worth a detour....

Adler-Bräu in Schlüsselfeld
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 7/1/2004 9:39:48 AM
The "Helles" is not really light; You'll get there an amber-coloured, spicy beer: low-carbonated and full of beautiful hop-aromas; not extremely bitter, but very aromatic !

Brauerei Brütting in Friesen
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 6/28/2004 9:10:06 AM
In the Gasthaus is now served St. Georgen Kellerbier (06/04) , o,5 l for 1.30 ? !

Kalt-Loch-Bräu GmbH in Miltenberg
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 6/28/2004 5:15:05 AM
Nice old brewery tap in a narrow picturesque street; the Faust (former Löwenbräu) is situated next door. The Kalt-Loch serves nearly daily a well balanced, smooth Doppelbock on draught, which seems to be not so "heavy" as the "-ator"-examples from south of Bavaria. Be careful ! The Export (from the bottle) seems to contain some traces of smoked malt, a very "franconian" aftertaste ! Such individual brews are hard to find in this part of Germany, don't miss them !

Brauerei zum goldenen Adler in Höfen
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 4/19/2004 8:33:34 PM
Quite well balanced "rural" lager, not filtered, low carbonated; a bit sweetish and sticky in the aftertaste.

Greifenklau in Bamberg
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 3/25/2004 10:45:01 PM
This - sometimes - disappointing brew became really a well balanced, aromatic beer during last summer.....What happened to the brewer ?

Brauerei Spezial in Bamberg
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 3/5/2004 3:38:09 AM
The brewery-tap is great, of course. But try to enjoy the exellent Rauchbier, which is not so "cruel" in comparison to the Schlenkerla, on a warm summer evening at the Spezial-Keller (Oberer Stephansberg, not far from the Heller(Schlenkerla)-brewery). Beautiful view over Bamberg, a better place is hard to find....!

Staffelberg-Bräu in Loffeld
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 12/2/2003 4:09:22 PM
The Staffelberg-Märzen: a brown, full bodied brew with a slightly spicy flavour not too sweet.

Brauerei Drei Kronen in Schesslitz
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 12/2/2003 4:06:26 PM
Amber coloured pale Lager, complex, full bodied brew. The Brauereigaststätte makes You feel living in the 19th century.......

Schwanen-Bräu in Ebing
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 12/2/2003 4:05:05 PM
Dark brown, full bodied malty brew with a dry finish, low carbonation, very smooth. The old fashioned brewery-inn is worth a jouney

Brauerei Kraus in Hirschaid
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 12/2/2003 4:03:58 PM
An amber coloured typical example of a Kellerbier; very full bodied and soft, low carbonation, beautiful hop aroma - but not a simple bitterness: highly quaffable!

Brauerei Thomann in Wiesen
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 12/2/2003 4:02:34 PM
Dark brown, almost black beer; a rich malt aroma dominates the taste; hints of roasted malt (?) in the aftertaste, low carbonation

Brauerei Griess in Geisfeld
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 12/2/2003 4:00:14 PM
A well balanced amber coloured Kellerbier; full bodied flavour with a smooth, dry and hoppy finish. Worth a journey!

Brauerei Krug in Geisfeld
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 12/2/2003 3:58:56 PM
Dark brown beer; low carbonation; full bodied, but not too malty or sweet. Surprisingly bitter - but not unpleasant - for a beer of this colour. Fine !

Sankt Georgen Bräu in Buttenheim
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 12/2/2003 3:57:39 PM
Light brown, only slightly filtered Kellerbier: massive spicy hop aroma, hard to find in average german beers; very dry finish. Compare both Kellerbiers of Buttenheim and find out which one's the best!

Löwenbräu in Buttenheim
Comment from Dr. Heinzel on 6/25/2003 5:51:47 PM
Very hoppy, dry Kellerbeer (also called "Lager"),worth a journey! The Brauereigasthaus is simple but quite cosy. Staff and food O.K..
