Waldschloss-Bräu in Frammersbach
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 6:27:54 AM
Far away from the brewing heartland in Franconia, this brewery could be anywhere in Germany. Both Hell and Dunkel are a little bland in my taste, as is the Weisse Hell. But the Fuhrmann's Weisse Dunkel is soft with a full body and a pleasant hint of banana in the nose.

Rother Bräu in Hausen
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 6:26:00 AM
I have only tasted the Kloster Urstoff Spezial Märzen, brewed at the plant Klosterbrauerei in Münnerstadt. A dark, malty, heavy and very satisfying beer.

Adler-Bräu in Stettfeld
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 6:18:56 AM
Pleasant tap-room. The Pils is simple but satisfying. I found an grapefruit-like off-taset in both the Dunkel and the Zwickel.

Stöckel - Bräu in Hintergereuth
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 6:15:17 AM
Very good Landbier - brown colour, fruits and hops in the nose and a soft, malty taste with some butterscotch. Good Hell with an unusually hoppy character.

Held-Bräu in Oberailsfeld
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 6:12:45 AM
Very good Hell with tasty matiness and good hop balance. Good, very dark Dunkel with a toasted bread character that ends a little too quick.

Löwenbräu in Buttenheim
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 6:09:26 AM
Fresh and pleasant Kellerbier with some harshnes in the aftertaste. Nice Keller as well. The Pils and the Weizen were less characterful.

Brauerei Alt in Dietzhof
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 5:53:01 AM
Rural brewery with a very good Dunkel - almost black and very aromatic with liquorice and chocolate. Low bitterness. Unfortunately the Hell was infected when I tasted it (diacetyl).

Brauerei Reichold in Hochstahl
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 5:48:59 AM
A rural brewery in a slepy hamlet. Solid beers with dark yellow colour. The Vollbier is soft with a dry aftertaste. The Bock is sweetish, fruity and warming and dries out as well. I liked the Kellerbier and Weizen less.

Brauerei Rothenbach in Aufsess
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 5:44:21 AM
More like a modern restaurant with more tourists than locals behinde the glasses. The brewery has three nice orange-brown beers - Dunkel, Festbier and Bock - with a bready maltiness and a dry aftertaste. They are quite similar, but I especially liked the Bock. In my opinion, the Wiezen and Pils have less character.

Brauerei Aichinger in Heiligenstadt
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 5:41:01 AM
This is a must go place if you like old world atmosphere and beer. Pale brown Märzen colour. Extremly malty and aromatic with some fruit and a little hops to make balance. Perhaps not the cleanest of beers, but very sympathetic.

Brauerei Grasser in Huppendorf
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 5:37:58 AM
A lively brewery tap with some good beers. The brown Vollbier balances chocolate with what could be a limestone harshness. Also the Pils is surprisingly good. I didn't like the Zwickel and Weizen as much as the other beers.

Brauerei Löwnbräu Hölzlein in Lohndorf
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 5:33:25 AM
The classic Franconian brewery. Carefully preserved exterior and interior with wooden panels and an oak refridgerator for the (plastic) barrels. Soft, malty and aromatic Vollbier with some chocolate and a pleasant but not bitter aromatic aftertaste. The brewery still uses the old coolship.

Brauerei Höhn in Memmelsdorf
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 5:26:16 AM
The dark yellow, opaque Görchla has a fresh Gärkeller nose and som fruit, but also a phenolic off-taste. More a post-war suburbian hotel than a classic pub.

Mühlenbräu in Mühlendorf
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 5:24:00 AM
Pleasant, fresh Kellerbier and a big sweetish Bock.

Brauerei Kaiser in Grasmannsdorf
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 5:20:16 AM
Since I sat outside on the terrace on a warm April afternoon, I have no complaints. The beers are perhaps not on par with the products from neighbouring villages, but they are o k. Since I went to the tap for my beer, I have no complaints about the service.

Brauerei Schwan in Burgebrach
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 5:17:44 AM
Fresh, yeasty and soft Kellerbier with plenty of hops in the aftertaste. The Keller is a classic.

Stern-Bräu in Schlüsselfeld
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 5:13:59 AM
A superb Hell with a perfect malt and hop balance. Powerful with some aroma but by no means heavy. Clean and simple. The Dunkel is more on the sweet side with some smoky phenols.

Adler-Bräu in Schlüsselfeld
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 5:11:14 AM
Soft and very clean with some hop balance. Nice pale brown colour. A hit of toasted bread. Nice tap on the attractive small-town marketplace.

Brauerei Zwanzger in Uehlfeld
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 5:06:23 AM
Surprisingly good Hell with a soft, aromatic base and a good hop balance. The Weizen and the Pils have less character. The Kellerbier is more interesting with a tobacco-like aroma and some harshness in the aftertaste. Excellent Franconian food. Nice tap with red-nosed customers.

Brauerei Prechtel in Uehlfeld
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 5:03:53 AM
Very pleasant brewery tap. The bottom-fermented beers are a little to bland in my opinion, but the wheat beer is better than the Franconian standard. Notably, the brewery has retained its coolship.

Brauhaus Höchstadt e.G. in Höchstadt/Aisch
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 4:58:52 AM
Nice soft Weizen with a banana nose. Aromatic and hoppy Kellerbier with some harshness. Light and hoppy Pils of standard German type. The Vollbier Hell is bland. But the Schwarze is really black with liquorice, chocolate and a hit of ashtray. Old-style beer with a dry finish. very charming.

Brauerei Blauer Löwe in Höchstadt/Aisch
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/10/2007 4:54:44 AM
I agree about the refurbished pub, but some of the beers are good. The Vollbier Hell has a powerful malt and hop balance. The Pils could be more bitter. The wheat beer is far too thin and a little acidic. The best beer in my opinion is the Zwickel, an unfiltered Märzen with dry malt, some fruit and a good hop balance. pleasant Gärkeller aroma.

Brauerei Hennemann in Sambach
Comment from Jan-Erik svensson on 11/10/2007 4:51:22 AM
Pleasant rural brewery. The brownish lager is soft, malty and sweetish with caramel but very little hops to balance. Anyway a very pleasant beer. The Zwickel is more phenolic and harsh.

Brauerei Wernsdörfer in Schönbrunn im Steigerwald
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/7/2007 10:37:45 AM
Deep golden. Some caramel-sweet malt balanced by phenols and some adstringency. Perhaps a little butterscotch too. But the peppery hoppiness is good.

Brauerei Herrmann in Ampferbach
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 11/7/2007 9:47:20 AM
Very good Kellerbier with some dry chocolate in the body and a very fresh, aromatic hoppiness. As good as Franconian beer gets.

Brauerei zum goldenen Adler in Höfen
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 5/4/2007 3:11:16 AM
Sean McCambridge, you were probably at another Höfen south of Bamberg. This one is close to Rattelsdorf north of Bamberg.

Brauerei Fischer in Freudeneck
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 5/4/2007 3:08:48 AM
On a recent visit, the beer was more balanced and refreshing than some years ago. Slightly more hops.

Brauerei Hennemann in Unterleiterbach
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 5/4/2007 3:06:13 AM
Dark yellow rather than Dunkel. Big, aromatic malty taste with rich hops as a balance. Good Franconian lager in the rural style with more power than elegance.

Brauerei Hellmuth in Burgkunstadt
Comment from Jan-Erik Svensson on 5/4/2007 3:01:02 AM
The pale lager is soft, sweetish and fresh with a pleasant Gärkeller aroma. The dark lager is less characterful.
