The Breweries of Bamberg Bamberg is blessed with 9 breweries, more than any other city in Franconia. Considering the population is only about 75,000 people, that is not half bad. And while most people think of Rauchbier ("smoked beer") when they think of Bamberg, only two of these breweries (Schlenkerla and Spezial) brew them. Another good thing for the beer tourist is that six of the breweries can be found in pairs, often right across the street from one another, making for easy comparisons. All of the pubs serve traditional Franconia fare as well as snacks. Something that many Americans take some getting used to is that it is usual to share a table, especially when the place is getting full. So if there are no empty tables, but a couple of empty chairs don't be shy. Even if you don't speak any German, a pointing at the chair and smiling will get the idea across. You may make some new friends. You may also want to read the article "Drinking Beer in Franconia" for further expanation of some terms and traditions. I've broken this article into five pieces for easier reading:
You can find information on non-brewpub places to drink in the article "Drinking Beer in Bamberg."
