The Breweries of Bamberg The first pair of breweries are Brauerei Spezial and Brauerei Fässla, which are right across the street from each other on Obere Königstrasse, a street that runs parallel to the Rhine-Danube canal. It is a short walk from city center and a bit longer walk from the Main Train Station. Brauerei Fässla (the name means "little keg") normally has two beers on draft, the house Lagerbier (basically a Helles) and the Gold-Pils, a tasty pilsener. They also brew a number of other beers, sometimes available on tap, but usually in bottles: Zwergla, a dark lager beer (a Zwergla is a little gnome and the brewery uses it as part of their logo); Weizla, an unfiltered wheat beer; and Bambergator, a dopplebock that at 8.5% is the strongest beer brewed in Bamberg. As you go in the front door the main rooms are on the right. Sometimes I find them a bit smoky (with tabacco smoke, unfortunately) so I often head to the back where there is a little courtyard with picnic style tables. If you sit back there you have order your beers at a little window in the hallway. (See "Drinking Beer in Franconia: for more info on this). The brewery itself is behind the door on the way to the restrooms and is visible if the doors are left open. Brauerei Fässla also has reasonably priced hotel rooms (around Euro 34 for a single, Euro 54 for a double, with private bath and breakfast). They do not have an elevator, though, and the rooms are up two or three narrow flights of stairs. While it may help work off the beer, it is not good for anybody who has problems with stairs. The pub closes at 1pm on Sundays, but Spezial across the street is open then!
Across the street from Fässla is Brauerei Spezial. They are one of the Rauchbier producers in town, though not all of their beers are smoked. The standard everyday beer -- the one you get if you just order a "beer" -- is smoked, though not as much as the more famous Schlenkerla. They also periodically serve an "Ungespundetes" -- a pale, unfiltered, lightly carbonated (and in this, case unsmoked) lager. In bottles they have a wheat beer and a Märzen (both smoked) and in the late fall brew a delicious Rauchbock. Brauerei Spezial is different than most brewpubs in that they also produce their own rauchmalt (other specialty malts they buy from local maltsers). As you go in the front door the main pub is on the left. There are three rooms, a very small one right as you come in the door and two larger ones farther back. They serve lunch and dinner (until 9pm) with snacks after that. They also have daily specials. Brauerei Spezial also has guest rooms, but only seven of them and they fill up quickly. However at Euro 25 for a single room it is just about the best deal in town. They do not have telephones or TV's -- which can be a plus sometimes! The pub closes at 2pm on Saturdays (who ever heard of a pub closed on Saturday nights!) They are open every other day (including Sunday) at 9am!
