From 1996 to 2002 I visited Crailsheim Germany and one of my first biers was Spielbacher Special Hell. A very excellent bier and I miss the tastse. I wish I could import it back to the United States here in Louisville, Kentucky. I love the farm, barn, pub inside and the family that waited on me.

Visited twice in 2012, once in early May (inside) and in mid July (outside). I must say I thought the Gastof was very good, modern but with a nod to the traditional, with excellent food. The beer garden is also a lovely spot to while away an afternoon. The stand out beer for me was the excellent Pils, unfiltered and very fresh, flowery, hoppy and refreshing, if a little one dimensional. Well worth visiting on the excellent Funf Siedla Stieg along with the equally excellent Hofmann (Hohenschwarz) and Lindenbrau (Grafenberg).

Stopped here on a Friday afternoon while walking around the area in January. Drank two beers, I don't remember much about them (sorry). Also had a bit of lunch -- the typical rural Bavarian stuff. Charming place, plenty of other customers there as well. Glad to report it is alive and kicking.

We stopped here on a Friday afternoon while walking around the area in January. Smaller place than Hummel nearby, but also busy and traditional. Only had one beer here and no food, but I'm happy to report that this place is open and seems to be doing well.

A few of us did a walk in the area on a Friday afternoon in January and stopped here (and a few other places). A pretty big selection of beers -- all that we had were enjoyable. Did not have any food here. Traditional atmosphere with plenty of locals.

We went here rather late the other night and found it still open and busy with old men playing cards and some women in the back room talking. They make some organic beers, which is a nice touch. Nothing blew me away, but I wanted to at least report that this place is still open and doing well (no review since 2006).

I was an American that worked at this Keller and I'm sad to hear that it closed. The beer was excellent, the food was exquisite, and the beer garden was a nice place to have Sunday dinner, will sure miss it....

Finally had a chance to take the brewery tour. Well worth the time and small fee. Tour is in German, but they do give out a document in English so you can follow along. Tour was in depth, showing quite a bit of the old brewing equipment and techniques. The 5K+ display of mugs and glassware is rather impressive. Nice .5l at the end of tour from tap was very tasty. Met Peter brew(?) who had been with the brewery for 45 years and is one of the retired brew masters. He took us behind the scenes to show his distillery and a taste of his distilled beer spirits. The spirits were not bad at all. Turned out to be quite a pleasant afternoon.

I visited the monks and drank their beer while stationed at Bad Kissingen with the 536th M.P. Co which later became B. Co. 793rd M.P. Bn in 1976 - 1977. The greatest beer I've ever drank. They had a ski lift and the St. Bernards back then.

I am an American living in Germany for ^15 years. I really enjoy beer. Germany makes the best beer I have tried (so far). That said, IMHO, Tucher makes the worst beer I have ever had. Mein Frau (my wife) told me years ago Tucher was one of the best but when mass produced the quality went downhill. Similar to Coors when the government ordered Coors to be shipped East of the Mississippi. In non-refrigerated trucks.

Though still a place on the Franconian map to place a pin, there is only a Vollbier now on tap. While it is a rich golden malty brew with some nice cereal notes, it doesn't evoke classic Franconia in terms of dry and fruity. I was here in 2002 and it seems the beer was "better" then than it is now. That said, we enjoyed sitting in the rear garden area with a small number of locals, drinking a very quaffable beer at 10:30 in the morning. The owner gave me a huge pile of new coasters when I asked him if I could have one clean one to bring home! Evidently, they still brew an unfiltered kellerbier for their nearby keller but it has very infrequent opening hours. If I ever get back to this area, I'll try to time myself accordingly. This area is very accessible with the Bus 265, which is included with the Bayern Ticket.

| Tried to post this review below under the keller entry but it was rejected.
Finally got a chance to visit the Kellerberg area and one of its many highlights is Roppert's Keller. This is not amongst the trio of kellers at the top of the hill but is actually a bit more accessible because of this. No matter, judging by the crowds, locals seem to love it. We soon found out why. Their kellerbier was rich and full-bodied with a nice dryish finish. At under 2 Euros a half-liter, it's a bargain, as well. We shared an ample Schuferla (shoulder of pork) with dumplings which was incredibly tasty and succulent. This was also quite reasonable at under 7 Euros. With so many good places in the vicinity, it's a good idea to share both food and beers. We sampled 18 different beers in three days. |

Had the pleasure of staying at this fine guesthouse in August of 2012. The room was very nice and quite good value. Breakfast was good but not amazing by Franconian standards. With so many breweries and many kellers (the reason for our visit) in the area, we only ate one small meal at the restaurant in Willersdorf. We shared an assorted cold meat plate which was very good and excellent value. The lovely Kellerbier was dry and fruity and the Rauchbier had a strong smokey aroma and initial flavor, it's finish was clean if unspectacular. It's a bit more expensive drinking here than in surrounding pubs (and even its own keller) but it is fairly upscale and nicely decorated.

Visited with Nick B on a late Friday afternoon. Very crowded but friendly enough and quite like a traditional English boozer! Thought the beer was a bit off but, after first seidla, seemed better (it was the end of a good afternoon's session!). Kellerbier is darkish and more malty than Hebendanz. Seems like a close relative of their Schwarzer Anna, which was a little sweet for my tastes. Well worth a visit.

Sadly, urlaub for most of our visit but managed one seidla in the beautiful sunshine outside the pub. Really good beer, more hoppy than other Forchheim brews. Wish we could have sampled more in situ. From our experience, also available vom Fass at Gasthof Schloessla on Bambergerstr - and don't worry about the picaresque clientele, they seem quite harmless and friendly!

| Brauerei Greif in Forchheim
|
Comment from Barry on 9/22/2012 12:45:58 PM
Having tasted Greif kellerbier on the kellerwald, was determined to sample it at the brewery tap. First visit, door locked and bolted, second visit on 14/9/12, lo and behold, open and a good few drinking in the garden. This is not the most scenic location (by apartment blocks) nor are the straggling brewery buildings the most characterful. However, the beer was excellent - pale yellow in colour, a nice balance of hops/malt and, straight from the cask right by the brewery, in beautiful condition. We were joined by Nick B later in the afternoon and he confirmed with the lady serving that this was the same beer as served in the kellerwald but what an improvement. Particularly nice to drink out of a glass where you could really appreciate its colour. Greif is a bit of a walk out of town but well worth the effort - if you can find it open!

Visited Eichhorn twice between 28/9/12 & 14/9/12. First time, sat in garden, v. pleasant & friendly service. Enjoyed Vollbier, more malty & less hoppy than other Forchheim beers, but no less pleasant for that. Second time, pub was officially ruhetag but welcomed us to drink in the garden as they had a party in the lounge.

My mother is from Hammelburg where they brew Salch bier. I grew up with Salch Bier since I spent plenty time in Deutschland around 14 years. My great grandfather was mayor of Hammelburg during the WWII. I have many relatives still in Hammelburg and will visit again. The Salch Bier is great and their Bock Wines superb!

Comment from Jürgen Wening on 8/31/2012 1:40:21 AM
At Schwanenbräu, just opposite to Brauerei Herbst, you get Pils and dark Lager. The Pils really excited me, as it is not only hoppy, but very spicy, nearly hot. It's number three on my personal ranking list of franconian Pils now. The dark lager is malty and soft, very well made. Good beers. Good to have visited both places!

| Brauerei J. Herbst in Ebermannstadt

Comment from Jürgen Wening on 8/31/2012 1:27:07 AM
Reading the comments on both Ebermannstadt breweries I avoided visiting them for quite a time. After having been there only yesterday and trying all of their beers, I have to say that many things mentioned above are unjustified. Okay, both are hotels, so both are not 500 year old farm breweries with their unique atmosphere. But the beers are very good. At Brauerei Herbst (Sonnenbräu) you get Pils and Kellerbier. The Kellerbier is very low in carbon acid and well balanced. Unfiltrated and reddish in colour. A nice beer to start with. The Pils is great! Very soft and flowery but clearly a Pils. Great aromata, Hersbrucker hops maybe? Being in Ebermannstadt you have to start with this brewery because of the fragrance and floweriness of the beers. Go to the other brewery afterwards.

Comment from 1LT Paco on 7/1/2012 5:51:38 AM
I love beer but just like drinking it. This place was nearly full on a Sunday at noon. They had lager beer on tap and others only with a bottle. I had two lager beers. Good. Nice. Typical Franconian place except everybody at our table agreed the food was better than we expected. If you're in Buttenheim to visit the breweries there, it is well worth the jaunt up to Brauerei Sauer for another beer and some good food.
