Klosterbrauerei in Kreuzberg
Comment from Steve Huebner on 5/7/2012 4:00:25 PM
I was stationed in Darmstadt in 1987 and 1988 and our Combat Engineer (547th) unit would train at Wildflecken regularly. Each time we'd make a point to visit Klosterbrauerei and it was always my favorite. The setting is breathtaking and the beer amazing. Amost surreal. But again, the beer is amazing!

Klosterbrauerei in Kreuzberg
Comment from Andrew F on 4/15/2012 11:28:29 AM
This is, without question, THE best bier in all the world! My family and I were stationed in Germany 2006-2009. We traveled there often, but not often enough...I am looking at my 3 liter bottle today missing the mountain.

Brauerei Hofmann in Hohenschwärz
Comment from Jürgen Wening on 3/26/2012 3:52:38 AM
A fine dark Export with some complexity. Not too sweet. Very nice beer!

Thuisbrunner Elch Bräu in Thuisbrunn
Comment from Jürgen Wening on 3/26/2012 3:38:19 AM
It's good to see a long closed brewery being reborn. In this case the new owner did a very good renovating job. Nice place. Two sorts of unfiltered beer: Dunkel and Pils. The Dunkelexport is drinkable, but very malty and very simple. The hoppy Pils I liked better, but it also lacks in complexity. If I walked the 5-Seidla-Steig, I'd start here.

Brauerei Zirndorf in Zirndorf
Comment from Steve Burguiere on 2/26/2012 9:09:26 AM
I was staioned at Pinder 1973-1975, am looking for Zirndorfer glassware, anybody know how to ship it here?

Brauerei Düll in Volkach-Krautheim
Comment from Jürgen Wening on 1/30/2012 2:19:35 AM
Beautiful brewery tap, good food. Tried the Vollbier Hell and the Kellerbier. The Vollbier is tasty, hoppy in style, more a Pils than a Helles. The Kellerbier is like a darkish Märzen in colour but totally different in taste. Can't define it. Very interesting beer. Charly had the dark Vollbier and the Pils. He was very satisfied with the aromatic Pils, but not so with the dark beer. He said, it's to weak for a normally strong tasting sort of beer.

Brauerei Eller in Birkach am Forst
Comment from Jürgen Wening on 1/5/2012 11:26:47 AM
A charming village brewery with a very friendly brewmaster. The beers were a surprise to us. They brew Pils and Rotbier only, though Vollbier that is brewed elsewhere can be purchased in bottles. The beers are nice, especially the red one. Both have a mineralic taste, slightly like ironstone.

Klosterbräu Marienweiher in Marienweiher
Comment from Jürgen Wening on 1/5/2012 11:22:57 AM
A newish small scale brewery, run by two brothers. The new brewery is built on historical brewground; some centuries ago it was the place of the old Klosterbrauerei. Absolutely funny locals in there, enjoyed it very much! The beers served were: Adventsbier (a reddish Festbier), Helles and Dunkles Vollbier. All of them above average. A remote village, very nice.

Brauerei Hellmuth in Wiesen
Comment from Jürgen Wening on 1/5/2012 11:19:08 AM
Visited some days before Silvester and after Sauna at Staffelstein. Hellmuth brews a honey coloured Helles Vollbier with some bitterness and strength. Liked it much more than the thin beer of the neighbouring brewery. Nothing special, just good pale beer.

Klosterbrauerei in Kreuzberg
Comment from Dave G on 12/12/2011 11:34:58 PM
One of my favorite beers here in Europe... So glad I get to experience it often... as I live 25km's from it. It will be sad when I go back to the states in a few months. If anyone visits Germany or gets stationed here make sure you stop by and grab a 5liter to go! -Dave

Klosterbrauerei in Kreuzberg
Comment from Todd Battershell on 11/12/2011 4:35:37 PM
Boy, what can I say about this beer and the Monestary that hasn't already been said? It seems that everyone has enjoyed it as much as I had. I was stationed in West Berlin from '88 to '92 (5/502 INF) and only made it there once. I spent at least two trips per year in Wildfleckin and I went to PLDC there, but only made it once. I hope to make it back there someday. Maybe here in a few years when my boys are older.

Brauerei Först in Drügendorf
Comment from Nick B. on 11/6/2011 4:29:00 AM
Love the village and the place, and the Lager's pretty good, despite the brewery's attempt to kill your tongue with way, way too much CO2. A slight bit of huskiness distracts from what would otherwise be a pleasantly malty beer, fairly well balanced -- once you get past the cola-like effect of the over-carbonation. The Bock (from end October) is pleasant enough, a couple of shades paler than the Lager and only around 6.5% ABV, a touch sweet. Like so many Franconian brewers, they appear to sparge a bit too long; I'd gladly pay 10 cents more per Seidla for the extra malt to fix this!

Brauerei Zwanzger in Uehlfeld
Comment from Nick B. on 10/14/2011 7:35:10 AM
The Brauereigaststätte is nice and the basic Franconian food very good. The bottled Vollbier at only 4.5% is flavourful but the bitterness a bit harsh. "Hopfenextrakt" in place of "Hopfen" on the label gives a clue to this.

Brauerei Göller in Zeil am Main
Comment from Bern teitz on 10/13/2011 7:50:23 PM
Goeller Biergärten is one of the best in Germany. The Food is ample and of good quality. The pilsner beer is refreshing and full bodied. Worth the trip

Brauerei Wolf in Rüdenhausen
Comment from David Doerr on 10/11/2011 3:57:18 PM
This is the real thing. Farm, brewery, Gasthaus, Biergarten (another location) in one. Served by the owner, the Pils was a very good Bavarian version with more chewiness than most and excellent hops. The Landbiere was as good as it gets. More hops (aroma) than some. A high point on a ten day tour of Franconia.

Schlossbrauerei in Thüngen

This brewery operates as Burgbrauerei Herzog von Franken in some sort partnership with Arnsteiner.

Sternbräu in Elsendorf
Comment from Jürgen Wening on 9/14/2011 11:46:42 PM
Visited this small brewery yesterday. On tap was Helles Vollbier, Zwicklpils and Dunkles. The dark beer was a little bit too sweet and malty for me, the Vollbier Hell was pleasant with a nice iron aftertaste, the unfiltered Zwicklpils was strong and hoppy. All in all an average franconian brewery, but indeed very friendly people. Extra points for friendliness.

Having a glass now. It is a magnificent beer.

Klosterbrauerei in Kreuzberg
Comment from Richard Calnon on 7/24/2011 10:04:55 PM
Kreuzberg Beer is the best in the world, I first found it in 1983 while stationed in Wildflecken Germany. I have been going back there for nearly 30 years and it is still the best I have ever tasted. Other German beers are good, but this one is the best of them.

Klosterbrauerei in Kreuzberg
Comment from Steven Bishop on 7/19/2011 12:39:38 PM
I was stationed in Wildflecken, West Germany from 1982-1984 and found out firsthand exactly how good the beer at the Kreuzberg Klosterbrauerei was. Let me just say that this is bar none THE BEST BEER IN THE WORLD. And their Christmas Beer was awesome also. WOW!!

Brauerei Hembach in Rednitzhembach
Comment from Jürgen Wening on 6/28/2011 1:43:04 AM
Visited this small brewery yesterday and had a few Seidli with the brewer/owner. Good central franconian beer, all sorts unfiltrated. At the moment available are: Kellerbier, Zwickel-Pils, Dunkles Vollbier ("Stöffla") and Hefeweizen. All of them really good, especially the Pils and the dark beer. Very friendly brewmaster, who had learned his job at Brauerei Leitner, Schwabach, now out of use.

Brauerei Wurm in Bieswang
Comment from Jürgen Wening on 5/11/2011 11:31:07 PM
Had the Märzen and the Vollbier in another pub. The Märzen is dark orange in colour and beautifully powerful. Great taste. The Vollbier is a soothing drink but not that special.

Lindwurm-Bräu in Heideck
Comment from Jürgen Wening on 5/10/2011 2:47:25 AM
The brewery stopped brewing some time ago and gets the beer as a Lohnbräu now. Hopefully they restart production.

Brauerei Michael Trassl oHG in Hütten
Comment from Jürgen Wening on 4/29/2011 2:54:09 AM
Pleasant and rounded beers are being produced here. We sampled the Vollbier hell, the Pils, the dark beer and the Märzen. They're all soft and well balanced. The dark beer isn't that malty, the Pils isn't that hoppy. They're all good allrounders. Very friendly brewmaster by the way, who told us, that he's making a new Zwickl at the moment - a light and a dark version, unfiltrated. That should become very good...

Brauerei Lang in Schönbrunn
Comment from Jürgen Wening on 4/29/2011 2:49:49 AM
Beautiful brewery tap, called 'Bräustübl'. We tried the dark beer, the Vollbier hell and the Pils. All of them are brewed in the typical regional style. The water in the Fichtelgebirge flows over granite and is very soft. That softness is the main character of a Fichtelgebirgsbier. Comparable to the beers of Brauerei Hütten.

Brauhaus Ploss Gasthausbrauerei in Selb
Comment from Jürgen Wening on 4/29/2011 2:42:52 AM
The brewery is a nice modern brewpub with good food and very friendly staff. Weizen and Lager are always, Zwickl is seasonally brewed. Both the Lager and the Zwickl were diacetyl bombs and very 'bananesque' when we sampled them at the brewery. Quite horrible.

Brauerei Scharpf in Heilgersdorf
Comment from Jürgen Wening on 4/19/2011 3:09:58 AM
After having a few Seidli at Sesslach yesterday, we went straight to brewery Scharpf of Heilgersdorf to try their Märzen. It's a very malty beer with hints of marzipan and a beautiful bittersweetness. Becomes more unusual towards the end of the glass. Also tried the Bock, which is a chewy, mighty beer, but as many bock beers tend to be, quite sweet.

Kommunbrauhaus in Sesslach
Comment from Jürgen Wening on 4/19/2011 3:06:18 AM
Visited Sesslach and the beautiful brewery building yesterday. The beer is unfiltrated, hoppy and full of lively flavours. Absolutely recommended!
