Laws regulating the Gastronomie fall under the dominion of the individual Bundesländer. Bavaria's Rauchverbot is supposedly going into effect on 1.1.2008 (or "1.1.2008" for Yanks ;)), and like in other states that I've heard of, smoking will be prohibited indoors in all places of gastronomical business. Bars, pubs, restaurants, cafés, basically overall. If a place has a seperate, closed-off room, then this room may be used as a smoking room. And that's the sucky point--how well this room has to be closed off is perhaps not well defined. It can not be the main room of a place though. On 1st September, a general Rauchverbot went into effect nation-wide for schools, hospitals, public transit, and other places which fall under the dominion of the federal government. We'll see how it goes--as I flew back through FRA from the UK on 2nd Sep., non-smoking signs had been erected over the smoking vent station apparatus in the airport, but they were still operating, and people were still smoking at them, including airport personnel. But it fell on a weekend, so....
