if you are searching for inexpensive B&B, you may have a look at .
Starting from Frankfurt/M., travelling for history (too), and saving money instead of going to Frankonia, Oberpfalz, Regensburg or Munic, why not going to Aschaffenburg (Schloss), Mespelbrunn (Schloss), Wertheim (Altstadt, Burg), Miltenberg (Altstadt) and Amorbach (Abteikirche). All are very romantic looking small towns, not so far away from Frankfurt, and liking Bamberg, you will like them, too. (And I'm saying this as being grown up in Bamberg.)
There's one big 'but': In this region you have to drink Frankonian wine instead of beer.
