Modern Brewpubs

See, you've hit upon my personal gripe: The modern (open since the 1980's) brewpubs in Germany are nearly *universally* lame, beer-wise. They tend to brew a yeasty, bland, blonde beer, and then maybe a yeasty, lame, dark one. (There are a couple of exceptions--a couple in Berlin are excellent, as well as the Vogel outfits around Karlsruhe.) Widmer Hefeweizen from Oregon is more exciting than 95% of these beers. Some of these are neat *places* though--I like going to the Barfüßer in N-berg every once in a while, just because I like the *place*, and the food's pretty good. What'd be cool, would be to have the modern brewpubs brew beers like modern brewpubs in the US do: kinds of beers that do well with the equipment. It works in Vienna--1516! There's perhaps no functional difference between the likes of Ambräusium and Griess' Brauereigaststätte (brewery pub/tavern/low-scale restaurant), in that they are both brewery taps, but they're simply not the same sort of place.
