Bamberg & Franken

Hi Mark Nick is a great source of information, as you will have noticed... There are also a few books describing short walks, a few hours, and long-distance walks - but largely ignoring the beery refreshment side. Since you will be stationed in Bamberg you need something in the area. Here are a few: Walk #1 (except Mondays, Tuesdays): Morning beer in Bamberg at Greifenklau, overlooking the Altenburg castle. Find your way up to the castle (map!), refreshments available, obscure footpath right across castle entrace heading down into Wildensorg. Head for Debring and the Müller brewery. Cross the river and head west following the river until you reach Mühlendorf and the Mühlenbräu brewery by the river. Back on the main road, look for the Kunigundenweg footpath signs (blue church on white background). Follow the Kunigundenweg for about 2 hours through the woods and you are back in Bamberg at the Michaelsberg. Altogether about 4½ hours of walking. Walk #2 (only Fridays): Walk or get a bus to Dörfleins just north of Bamberg, Eichhorn brewery/Zum Schwarzen Adler. Walk through the forest to Kemmern (1½ hours) and the pleasant Wagner Keller. Then a 2 hour walk across the wooded hill to Appendorf and the Fössel-Mazour brewery. Not much of a beer maybe, but on Fridays nights from 19:00 this is the place for real Franconian country music. Don't stay too long though, you need to continue for another hour on a path just to the east of the main road to Baunach and Sippel before you catch the last train to Bamberg at 22:30. If you miss it, a taxi will cost about 20-25 Euros. Walk #3 (except Mon-Wed): Take the bus from outside the railway station to Schesslitz 09:25 on weekdays. Two breweries will get you going: Drei Kronen and Barth-Senger. Walk through Zeckendorf to Giechburg castle, refreshments available. Continue to Ludwag village and north to Würgau where you will find the Hartmann brewery. Occasional buses from Würgau to Bamberg until 17:59. You need to get a good map, the shop at the railway station in Bamberg will most likely sell the Fritsch Wanderkarte Bamberg Forchheim. Good luck - you will have a wonderful time in Bamberg! Gunnar
