Quote: "Here in Amsterdam, the major auto-rental companies are Hertz, Avis, National, Budget and Enterprise."

Which explains why the last rental car I picked up at AMS was from Europcar, and why I've also used Sixt extensively. The last time I picked up a car from Hertz in Europe, I was in line behind German customers... and some folks from India. Other times, it's been British, Australian, and Russians.

Quote: "Do you really believe that Budget would spend the money to open an office in the most expensive city in a distant country on the expectation that local people would make it financially worth while?"

That isn't even true for where I live in the USA. The main reason to have such facilities is to provide services to people from elsewhere - and there are a lot of 'elsewheres' for people to be from. Perhaps it would be useful to give the blanket generalizations a rest, and realize that a person's personal choice is just that?
