A Visit to Brauerei Spezial
On a recent trip to Bamberg I had occasion to stay at Brauerei Spezial. I had been to Bamberg before but I had never realized that it was also a hotel. They have seven very nice rooms upstairs, large and bright. The do not have either a telephone or a television, but thats OK with me.
The brewery is owned by the Merz family and it is very much a family business. Christian Merz is the brewer, Frau Merz runs the kitchen. Wolfgang Merz, Christrian's brother is one of the waiters. Even the children help out.
My room overlooked the brewery in a rear building. Just about every morning I was awakened by the arouma of malt and hops. It was better than any alarm clock. After a couple weeks of that I just had to see the brewery and Herr Merz graciously gave us a tour one afternoon.
