Interesting comment from a German friend ...

You all are right: the average german really doesn't care very much about his beer ! There are many, many people who think that the yellow crap called "Warsteiner", "Veltins" or other macro-swill is a real good drink ! The Bamberg region is, although it surrounds a world heritage, a rather forgotten corner of our nice country.......;-) Altbier can be great - in the Düsseldorf brewery-taps, some Kösch varieties are also well quaffable, but the widest choice of high-quality beers can be found only in Franconia ! It's very difficult to find in Bamberg and in the villages a real bad beer. Even if You don't like Rauchbier, there are many other gems to be sampled: the Griess Geisfeld stuff, the Buttenheim beers from both breweries, the Mönchsambach brews and so on. I'm afraid, that more people from abroad (U.K., USA, Scandinavia, Czech Republic) are interested in this beer-culture than people from Germany. It's a pity !
