DB Gets Tough

Just learned yesterday that the Deutsche Bahn (the national rail company) will toughen up its rules on ticket purchases in the local/short-distance trains starting 1st April. Basically, you will no longer be able to buy tickets from the conductor personally on the train. The rule has always been that you are not to board a train without a valid ticket. The conductor has always had the discretion to sell you a ticket or give you a fine of €40 or double the fair for your journey, whichever is more. I've always found conductors to be happy to sell me tickets on board, especially if I ask them before I board if it's ok. As of 1st April though, there is to be no more sale of tickets on board local trains (not including IC & ICE trains). This means, if you get on without a ticket, the conductor is supposed to fine you. Just a head's up.
